We get the government we deserve

So I’m trying to come up with the appropriate comparison.
MySA.com: City Council

But Cibrian, who collected a few developer contributions of her own as well as the endorsements of businessman B.J. “Red” McCombs and Valero Energy Corp.’s political action committee, ran an aggressive grass-roots campaign that relied heavily on door-knocking. She also turned heads waving signs [...]

You call this a campaign flier?

Well, I got what I expect to be the last campaign flier from Morris Stribling in the mail today. What can I say, things don’t look good for him. The flier doesn’t mention his opponent by name or otherwise even once. Not even “my opponent.” No accusations of “dirty politics.” No misleading titles or [...]

Opportunity knocking for District 8?

MySA.com: Metro | State

Cibrian — a Corpus Christi native and public affairs consultant whose former clients include Moores Cafeteria Services and STC Construction

A public affairs consultant? You know what that is, don’t you? That’s someone who helps businesses compete for government contracts. I don’t know what she has done for STC Construction lately given that [...]

Diane Cibrian–because it’s easier than thinking

Looks like Diane Cibrian has finally found the key to getting people to vote for her in the run-off election–fear of poor people! Check out her latest campaign flier, I was so disgusted with it that I actually took the time to scan it in for all to admire.

So it’s all those [...]

Do you believe in Santa?

The latest fliers from the candidates in the run-off for district 8 arrived today and it looks like the serious mud slinging has begun.
Cibrian’s is an 8×11 piece with a picture of a clear-cut area of what I assume to be a development, maybe the one that generated all the controversy over by 281. [...]

You get what you pay for

In District 8, Cibrian, who owns a small consulting business

Shouldn’t that be “former” owner? Or do you get to claim that you’re a small business owner whether you have any business or not? Tell you what, Diane, just name your current business and a give a vague description of some of your [...]

It was obvious what I meant

MySA.com: Ken Rodriguez

Clarification: On Wednesday, I reported that the city sued Stribling in 2003 for allowing a historic structure on his property to erode. I also reported that Stribling made the requested repairs. Implied — but not clearly stated — was that the city did not pursue the suit after Stribling began making repairs. The [...]

Some questions for District 8 candidates

If you’re counting on the Express-News to report on the campaign issues concerning District 8–forget it. Now they do have some columnists who seem quite willing to follow-up on issues contributing to mud-slinging if someone provides them with with information. How depressing.
What I would like is for the candidates to answer the following questions:

If the [...]

Got it now

So which District 8 candidate is Rodriguez talking about?
MySA.com: Metro | State

Overcoming a front-runner is tough enough. But try doing it when you’ve made property taxes a central issue, and you’ve been sued for taxes owed.

Let’s see, it’s somebody who has been sued for taxes owed and who has made property taxes a central issue? [...]

Are we over-taxed?

The Tax Foundation - Property Taxes on Owner Occupied Housing by County, 2005
Property Taxes on Owner Occupied Housing by County, 2005

So are we over-taxed or are we simply petty, junk-dog whiners who want something for nothing?
