Front Page News

Our local newspaper, The San Antonio Express News, does a lousy job of covering the Iraq War.  For those of you who read it as your primary source of news, you may have missed an article buried on 9A.  It was headline news for the New York Times, Baghdad Blast Leaves 51 Dead, and the Shiites Call for Revenge.

What makes this news applicable to our community?  It involves US troops and we certainly have a lot of those in the San Antonio area.  This neighborhood in Baghdad is part of a new pro-American neighborhood patrol. American troops may have been the actual target. No Americans died, but American soldiers are being blamed by Iraqi locals for the attack itself because of our current policy in the area.

When big news comes out of the Middle East and doesn’t make the front page, we need to question why.  I’m sure that a conservative leaning newspaper doesn’t want to call attention to the fact that our current policy in Iraq is failing, especially when the presumed Republican nominee, John McCain, only wants to continue on the same path.  I’m sure that the editors of the San Antonio paper would only say that local readers aren’t interested.  We know otherwise.
