Sign of the times
Star-Telegram.com: | 02/22/2008 | Secret Service defends security at Obama rally in Dallas
Others said they had recently attended large political events, many for Obama, where security screening was halted. Jeremy Dibbell of Boston said in an e-mail that he attended an Obama event in Boston at which “the same thing happened there. We waited for hours in line as people were screened, and then suddenly everyone was just allowed in without going through any inspection at all.”
I suspect some people will try to make this sound like some conspiracy against Obama but I just take it as a sad reflection of the times and ultimately, U.S. Secret Service incompetence. The incompetence part first: apparently more people have been showing up than expected at many rallies, why haven’t they adjusted for it by now?
The sad part, why do we have to do it? We expect it at political rallies but when I have to have my purse checked to get into a San Antonio Missions baseball game, things seem out of whack. But then again, with the shootings at college campuses, how long will it be before an unbalanced former youth sports league coach or player shows up for a minor league baseball game with a weapon?
