Born after 1964? You need a new license
Tighter driver’s license rules coming out - CNN.com
Americans born after Dec. 1, 1964, will have to get more secure driver’s licenses in the next six years under ambitious post-9/11 security rules to be unveiled Friday by federal officials.
The Homeland Security Department has spent years crafting the final regulations for the REAL ID Act, a law designed to make it harder for terrorists, illegal immigrants and con artists to get government-issued identification. The effort once envisioned to take effect in 2008 has been pushed back in the hopes of winning over skeptical state officials.
Dang, I don’t think I have my freaking birth certificate anymore. Three years, I only needed to be born three years earlier to bypass this. Here is a weird question though. Why is 44 years old a magic number? What about that age means you don’t need to get a more secure drivers license? The article goes on to say that the over-50 exemption was created to give states more time to get everyone new licenses. That still doesn’t make sense since everyone has to get one every so many years anyway why would it matter if you are over or under 50.

Jeeze!!! Will America take a freakin chill pill and get over it already! It happened seven years ago — isnt it about time we recover? Why are we being blamed for 9-11? The only one who is to blame is that prick we have as a so called president!! If we could get his sorry worthless ass out of the office, America will be doing alot better as a country. Bush has caused more damage to this country! I dont really understand how his stupid ass is still our president! Hell, even Regan didnt cause this much damage during his term… Bush has completely taken the liberty to put the lives of Americans in Jeopardy while he sits on his sorry good for nothing worthless ass in Camp David. The bastard should be the one who is sent over seas and placed on the front line of the war he created and has fueled with his mouth for the past seven years!!! The entire war was aimed at Bush to begin with so, I say lets give Iraq what they want!! Let’s ship Bush to them and we the Americans can go back to living a peaceful life!!!
You have to be kidding. Ummmm, terrorists are less likely to be the over 50 crowd? Let’s see, the best guess from our government’s intelligence (contradiction in terms) agencies is that Osama bin Laden was born in 1957. Cool, I guess he won’t have to get a Real I.D. when he comes to live here and carry out his humanitarian work. Maybe, he will be unable to teach the under 50 crowd how to fly planes and use various chemical and biological compounds to make bipartisan political changes. Has anyone looked at the major world terrorists and despotic leaders. Seems like there are very few in the under 50 crowd making the decisions. As always go to the bottom of the problem not its source. We stopped Sadam… oh wait he was over 50 too. It looks like the goal is to stop their minions so it looks like Homeland Security is doing something while leaving us scared so we continue to behave like good little patriots.
THIS IS A VERY WORRYING PROPOSITION TO ME.THIS IS DEFINITLEY A INFRINGEMENT OF THE AVERAGE US CITIZEN.NOT TO MENTION THE FACT IT IS AGE DISCRIMINATORY.I HOPE THE CIVIL LIBERTIES UNIONS CAN PROTECT US FROM THIS SITUATION.THE GOVERNMENT HAS PROVEN TIME AND TIME AGAIN THEY CANNOT BE TRUSTED TO KEEP OUR FREDOM AND LIBERTIES INTACT.THIS WILL BE JUST ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF THAT FACT WHEN ITS ALL SAID AND DONE.I DOUBT FRAMERS OF THE CONSTITUTION WOULD APPROVE OF SUCH MEASURES.
KEEP FREEDOM ALIVE DONT BE SO SCARY REPS
YOUR JOB ABOVE AND BEYOND ALL ELSE IS TO KEEP US FREE NOT TO IMPRISON US IN OUR OWN COUNTRY!!!!!!!!
What an as(s)inine concept! This type of policy will only create a “preferred terrorist candidate” recruiting category of anyone born prior to December 1st 1964. Most crime reports from the US Department of Justice, FBI Uniform Crime Report and state agencies don’t break down age beyond 21 or 25 years of age. So where are they getting their data? If there is data will it show a big fat zero for all crimes and arrests for any gender over the age of 50? NOT!
WTF? This is god-awful.
Orwell was only 33 years off when he wrote 1984.
Soon the police will be able to pull people off buses and out their cars, demanding their Papers. And if they can’t show them, or aren’t satisfactory, they will be taken.
This is the worst idea ever. The government doesn’t need to keep that much information on any one person. Especially not at the federal level. This is almost exactly the same effect as gun control laws. It only hurts the law abiding, non criminally offending citizen.
Chertoff? Sounds like a KGB plant to me. Which is appropriate because it seems like Mother Russia would be an appropriate place to hatch a concept like this. Chill, dudes.
BTW, you know the federal government is out of touch if they think $3.9B is inexpensive.
Some of these replies make me laugh.
Yes, the DHS is trying to stop the minions and not the leaders. Osama bin Laden did NOT take a direct role in the attacks of 9/11. Just like Bush isn’t taking a direct role in the war in the middle east. Leaders don’t fly planes into buildings or strap bombs around their wastes or pull triggers. They brainwash young, idealistic “kids” into doing that.
“This type of policy will only create a “preferred terrorist candidate” recruiting category of anyone born prior to December 1st 1964.” Um, did you not read the whole article? It went on to say the over-50 exception was temporary, and people over 50 will be rolled in later on.
And, how the heck will this new policy “imprison” us? I’m still trying to wrap my head around that and the ACLU’s comment that this policy “would irreparably damage the fabric of American life.” What does that mean? Seriously. If you really think this government is infringing on your civil rights, then move to China or North Korea. Your civil rights won’t be infringed upon there, because you won’t have any!
And no, our founding fathers probably would not approve of this policy, but a lot has changed in the past 230+ years.
I do think there’s something else the DHS needs to add to the list of security measures, though. States need to stop allowing drivers to renew their licenses online or through the mail, without even going into an issuing office.
There might be a legal reason for this. In 1964, the Civil Rights act of 1964 was passed effectively prohibiting the goverment from legal segregation and descrimination. Prior to this, there still was still a legal distinction between citizenship based on race. Technically, people born before the act was passed can still claim “Citizenship” under Article I. So our government might be admiting to some legal precedent with the 1964 year.
For those who wan to know more, investigate the legal case of the “Two” United States: Hooven & Allison Co v. Evatt, US Ohio, 324 US 652, 65 S.Ct. 870,880, 89 L. Ed. 1252
