Be careful what you wish for
Plano has been the center of debate over religious expression since 2003, when school officials told an 8-year-old boy during a holiday party that he could not hand out pens that described the Christian origin of candy canes.
The boy’s parents sued the district in December 2004, alleging a pattern of violations of religious rights and free speech.
I find it odd that the parents would choose to sue over such a stupid little thing. Believe me if my kid was in the school handing out pens that describe the pagan roots of Christmas or the real meaning of a Christmas tree to their good little Christian kids I promise you they would be suing just the same. It is a fine line and I can’t wait for them to see the error in their ways. I know they feel they are fighting the good fight but my mom used to always tell me “be careful what you wish for because it might come true.” Heck, it will be worth it to see the outrage fly when a child that isn’t Christian decides to exercise his/her first amendment rights too.
Religious handouts still a touchy subject for Plano schools | Dallas Morning News | News for Dallas, Texas | Latest News
“They should be able to express themselves,” said Mrs. Uriostegui, whose daughter, Daisy, is in kindergarten at Memorial Elementary School in Plano. “There’s more pressure, I think, put on the Christian community than, say, another religion.”
Oh please, Mrs. Uriostegui needs to walk a day in the shoes of someone who isn’t Christian in Texas and she will never talk about pressure again. I find it odd and a little funny that the clear majority in Texas finds the need to act as though they are persecuted at every turn when they have absolutely no idea what real persecution feels like.
