18 means 4?

Priscilla Plaza is clearly remorseful about failing to protect her 5-year-old son Nicholas from her boyfriend, Ruben Zavala Jr., said 175th District Court Judge Mary Roman, but fail she did.

On Friday, Roman punished the 36-year-old mother for that failure by handing her an 18-year prison term.

I read this article about 3 hours ago and something about it kept bugging me. I think it is perfectly reasonable that the mother was found accountable in her sons death. There is no greater responsibility than to protect our children and there are always options to get help. The 18 year sentence doesn’t seem extraordinary to me but then as I was rereading I realized what had bothered me so much about it.

Plaza could be eligible for parole in about four years.

What message are we sending if someone serving an eighteen year sentence is eligible for parole in four years? Why even bother attempting to say it is an 18 year sentence when parole is offered in four?
