Why not raise money for body armour too?

Bush tours troops’ Center for the Intrepid - Los Angeles Times

When the president splits his travel time between official events — in this case, the tour of the rehabilitation center — and political events, the government picks up a share of the costs that would otherwise be charged to the beneficiaries of the fund raising.

So the president comes to town to spend two hours at the Center for the Intrepid that was paid for through private contributions and makes a few side trips (more than two hours I assume) to raise $1.3 million dollars for John Cornyn and the government gets to pick up the tab.

How many of those who donated to the Cornyn campaign donated to the Center for the Intrepid? In all fairness, I would imagine a respectable number had. Now, how many would have screamed bloody murder if their taxes had been raised by the same amount for the federal government to pay for the facility as it should as part of its responsibilities to veterans? I know, just because some soldiers have chosen to make sacrifices doesn’t mean the rest of the population should be required to make any sacrifice in their support otherwise, the terrorists win.
