So, ticking off China is okay but not Turkey

U.S. honor for Dalai Lama angers China - CNN.com

BEIJING, China (CNN) — China has offered harsh criticism of U.S. plans to honor the Dalai Lama with a Congressional medal on Wednesday in a Washington ceremony.

“U.S. leaders meeting the Dalai (Lama) seriously violate the basic principles of international relations,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said in a statement. Lui called Tibet “an inalienable part of China” and a matter for the country’s internal affairs.

Just a quick observation here. So, calling a hundred year old genocide a genocide is a real no-no but ticking off the Chinese government by honoring a live human being is okay?

By the way, I personally love the Dalai Lama and am thrilled he is in the states again and receiving the Congressional Gold Medal. I just find it odd that one slight is alright but the other isn’t.

  1. Are you really comparing a partisan political move with honoring a former Nobel laureate and lifetime peace activist?

The point is the actions by Turkey have already been condemned back in the 70’s and there is no reason to do it now. Also, look how low-key the Dalai Lama visit was compared to the press conferences held by congress on how they want to continue to waste our tax dollars on issues that happened almost 100 years ago.

  2. No, Matt, I want to waste more of my tax dollars on Haliburton. I really couldn’t care one way or another if we pass resolutions until the cows come home about past wrongs. I can’t say I think they are particularly important nor do I advise that we do it but the tax dollar statement was simply silly. Nor, knowing who the Dalai Lama is, do I think he cares or needs us to honor him the Congressional Gold Medal. Everything in Washington is political including honoring the Dalai Lama and yes, this action does affect foreign relations just like the resolution about Turkey. You might find this more palatable but that doesn’t mean it has any less affect on foreign relations.
