How about taking a stand while the people are still alive?
The Associated Press: Panel Approves Bill on Armenians
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Bush administration, chafing over a House committee vote to label as genocide the deaths of Armenians a century ago, said Thursday lawmakers could better spend their time passing legislation attending to today’s problems at home.
As much as it pains me to say it, I agree. Not because I don’t think it was a genocide or that I believe Turkey has the right to put people in jail for insulting “Turkishness.”
It’s because of all the issues facing this country right now the Democrats pick this one to stand firm against Bush. Not “warrant less wiretapping, not torture, not what constitutes victory in Iraq, or any of the other issues that people voted the Democrats in to take action on.
Is this what the Democrats are going to run in 2008–we called a genocide a genocide when Bush wouldn’t? It’s not even a binding resolution. But that’s to be expected isn’t it since something like that would actually require backbone which our Democratic leaders seem to be sorely lacking.
Am I saying they shouldn’t have submitted the resolution? No. What I’m saying it looks like a pathetic attempt to act “tough” at the expense of saying and doing something meaningful regarding the Armenian tragedies since Congress hasn’t stood up to Bush on anything else. How about preventing some tragedies occurring with some real legislation?
