Perry moving outside Austin is really not a big deal

Governor’s move outside city not a problem, aide says

Gov. Rick Perry, gearing up to move next month into a $9,900-a-month house so the Governor’s Mansion can undergo renovations, might want to take a lawyer with him.

At issue is whether Perry’s move to a home just outside Austin conflicts with a state constitutional provision that the governor live at the seat of state government, separately specified as the City of Austin.

The governor’s office isn’t anticipating legal troubles, though.

Perry spokesman Robert Black didn’t dispute the residency requirements but said Thursday that they’re not a problem because the governor will keep his legal residency at the mansion near the Capitol while living about 14 miles southwest.

I can’t imagine that moving temporarily out of Austin is a big deal. I would have to say that the trips to Dubai and running around the country stumping for other republicans is a bigger deal to me personally than if he will move 1.6 miles west of the city limits. I sort of think the spirit of the Texas Constitution was that the governor was always going to be close to the state capitol which makes the 1.6 miles pretty mute and maybe we should be focusing on keeping him within the state or hey, why not at least within the country and ignoring the pathetic 1.6 miles he is moving outside Austin.
