Don’t chain your dog

Dogs must be taken off chains starting Oct. 1

Lose the chains and cut the tethers: A new city law effective Oct. 1 will set Austin’s unattended dogs free.

Starting next month, dog owners could be subject to a fine of up to $500 if their pets are left chained or tethered. Dogs kept mostly outside must have an enclosure with a minimum of 150 square feet for each adult dog.

Starting Oct. 1, chaining or tethering unattended dogs, such as this animal on Short Kemp Street last week, will be a Class C misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $500.

A notice to comply would be issued first to dog owners not in compliance, said Dorinda Pulliam, director of Town Lake Animal Center. If they don’t comply, a citation would be issued; a violation will be a Class C misdemeanor

This took affect on the 1st so I am a little late to post it but better late than never.
