Here’s a place you don’t want to live

Bloodied 70-year-old woman cuffed for having a brown lawn - CNN.com

OREM, Utah (AP) — A 70-year-old woman arrested in a dispute over her brown lawn pleaded not guilty Tuesday, then stood by as a Los Angeles lawyer waved handcuffs for the cameras outside court.

Betty Perry is charged with resisting arrest and failing to maintain her landscaping, both misdemeanors.

She was arrested for failing to maintain her landscaping!! What the heck is that? Now that is taking government oversight to new and interesting levels isn’t it? Wow, I suppose it is a good thing I don’t live there since when we were in a drought my lawn was several shades of brown and a good half of my back yard is dirt.

  1. First of all, in a time when we’re fighting to maintain our natural resources (including clean drinking water), people can get arrested for refusing to waste that precious resource? Mandatory lawn watering in drought conditions just to keep the lawn looking green is ridiculous. Second, I find it terrible what was has happened to this lady, and I hope the Orem PD can find a way to better serve and protect their community.

  2. I live in Orem and this is about the most upsurd thing I have ever seen. I haven’t spoken to anyone who has liked how this is turning out.

  3. Hi Adam, I am glad you think it is absurd because it is but your city/town has chosen to make failure to maintain your landscape a crime. It didn’t happen by accident. People within Orem decided that it should be a crime and worked until it became one. I am glad to hear that no one you have spoken to likes how this is turning out but now would be the time to start asking why it was made a misdemeanor in the first place and why Orem thinks the city should be in charge of such nitpicky oversight as how its residents maintain their lawns?

  4. What is our country coming to? Our jail sells are already over populated, and we waste our time not only reading this story, but covering it, and in court rooms. Polices’ job is to protect citizens from danger and keep things in orderly fashion.

This is too ridiculous as well as half of the other news that our “news channels” produce.

  5. What have things come to in this country? Because you don’t water your lawn you get arrested. If you question the police as to why they are arresting you, a charge of resisting arrest is added on. Worse yet police in this country are arresting everyone under the umbrella charge of disorderly conduct if you ask any question related to their actions.

A couple in DC were arrested under the “disorderly conduct” charge because they wore Impeach Bush t-shirts in a public park.

We have lost valuable freedoms in this country and it’s time to take them back.

  6. Guaranteed, if this asshole knocked my Granny to the ground, I would be in prison right now for killing this over-zealous prick. Dead cops tell no lies. Impeach BUSH!

  7. Unbelieveable. I live in Denver, and my lawn goes brown after one 90 degree day because of the dry heat, same goes for Utah. Arrested? I know you can get fined for NOT mowing your lawn… let’s see a picture of this brown lawn!

  8. Should have just tazered her.
