Why do judges bother to sentence?

Nicole Richie sprung from jail in 82 minutes - CNN.com

LYNWOOD, California (AP) — Nicole Richie was released from jail Thursday, just 82 minutes after the pregnant TV reality star checked in for a four day sentence for driving under the influence of drugs.

The reality show star, who checked into jail in this Los Angeles suburb at 3:15 p.m., was released at 4:37 p.m. “based on her sentence and federal guidelines,” Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Maribel Rizo said without elaborating.

Under a federal court mandate to manage jail overcrowding, arrestees sentenced to 30 days or less for a nonviolent offense are usually released within 12 hours, the sheriff’s department said in a statement.

Yes, I know it is a silly story about that girl but that isn’t what I want to focus on. What in the world is the use of sentencing anyone to 82 minutes in jail. Come on anyone can do an hour and twelve minutes without even starting to get bored. Heck, she never even made it into a cell. I just don’t understand the logic of judges sentencing for less than 30 days if arrestees are released within 12 hours. If that is the case shouldn’t the judges be looking for alternate sentencing if they know their sentences won’t be carried out.

  1. A bag holding a new life is the total value of her otherwise worthless presence. Would that she be held in a facility where her behavior could be controlled until the child is born. Then that little innocent might be taken from her. Her constitutional rights? What about those of the child?

  2. Celebrities in trouble. Which of the following celebrities has committed the worse offense? a) Paris b) Bill Murray c) Lindsay d) Mel Gibson e) Michael Vick f) Nicole Richie

  3. I consider Richie to be more violent than Hilton. Where is Hilton’s prosecutor now? Why so quiet?

  4. What I want to know is why these Judges are not going by the same sentences that those of us have had to go through? I know, I have been there and I certainly never got any special treatment like these 3 have. Overcrowding, hogwash! 1 day for “2″ DUI’s - ridiculous! 82 minutes - what is the point in THAT! CNN said it right last night - these judges ARE sending out the wrong message and I for one am miffed!!!
