Hays upping tax but 1 cent
Hays County residents face one-cent tax hike
HAYS COUNTY — Hays County residents could face a 1-cent tax increase this year, boosting the property tax bill for the owner of a home assessed at the county average of $149,000 by $54 a year.
The county will collect about $5 million more in property taxes this year to pay for the $81.2 million budget, with much of the increase due to higher maintenance costs for the county’s expanding network of roads and pay raises for county employees.
The budget includes a 5 percent pay raise for county employees, which will cost about $1.2 million, and 13 new positions. Among the positions are three legal and clerical assistants and an assistant district attorney for District Attorney Sherri Tibbe’s office
I just wanted to highlight another area using a one cent tax hike to cover quite a few things since the San Antonio city council is looking into a one-cent tax cut. I know that one cent was not what anyone in San Antonio was thinking when candidates were campaigning on tax cuts. Maybe next time we should as a city not be fooled by promises they can’t keep.
