Bridge collapse

Up to 50 vehicles trapped in bridge wreckage, officials say - CNN.com

As many as 50 vehicles are trapped in the rubble of an interstate bridge collapse, and officials said Thursday it could take five days or longer to search the wreckage.

Four people were confirmed dead, and officials said at least 62 people were injured when the Interstate 35W bridge over the Mississippi River collapsed during the Wednesday evening rush-hour in Minneapolis.

Twenty to 30 people were missing, Minneapolis police Chief Tim Dolan said Thursday. Thirty to 50 cars remain in the river, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

We are yet again reminded about how fragile our existence is. We don’t think much about the bridges we drive over from day to day except when one fails. I had to run to Target last night and was very aware of the 4 or 5 large bridges I was driving over. My thoughts are with the people of Minneapolis/ St. Paul today and in the days ahead.

I am of course reminded again that watching the 24 hour news channels (CNN, MSNBC, Foxnews) in a crisis is a bad idea because they regurgitate the same information again and again and speculate way too much. Just in the two hours I watched last night they all had to backtrack on several of the things they reported.

  1. We’ve had the best economic expansion in decades, unfortunately we’ve wasted all of it on picking fights around the world and never spent a dime on strengthening our home land infrastructure. What a disgrace, the cost Iraq war will me felt for the next 10 years and counting (1 trillion dollars). This is money should have been spent on AMERICA, I hope you agree - let all your politicians know http://www.youpolls.com/details.asp?pid=272 shame on them

  2. When will the U.S. government officials wake up to the realization that nothing lasts forever, including our infrastructure. How much of the taxpayers money do they waste everyday on projects (earmarks) that do nothing for the American good. It is estimated that $10 billion would be needed to repair our bridges. That is a drop in the bucket, compared to the wasted dollars spent on unnecessary projects. Our government must be lacking in the common sense department.
