346 fallen Texans
A sobering list that lingers past July 4 fireworks
Thursday, July 05, 2007It’s not much, really, just eight pages printed off a computer.
It’s 346 names; perhaps people you know, or think you do.
It looks like the graduating class of a high school.
It probably should be read aloud.
It starts with Andres Aguilar Jr. of Victoria. It ends with Christopher Zimmerman of Stephenville. It’s Nickalous Aldrich of Austin and Danny Anderson of Corpus Christi and Isela Rubalcava of El Paso and Wesley Fortenberry of Woodville.
It’s people who couldn’t make it to Independence Day fireworks.
It’s men and women who aren’t available for comment.
You know now. Of course.
It’s Texans who have fallen at war in Afghanistan and Iraq.
I tend to dislike stories like this one where something is parsed up to make it touch home more by bringing the local angle into it, but this one really struck me. (It is very early people so if that sentence doesn’t make sense just blow past it.) Click here for the list. Take a few minutes of your time and read the list. I tend to agree with W. Gardner Selby that it should be read aloud.
