Bexar County Needle Exchange

I wonder why this didn’t make the Express-News?

Bexar County approves needle exchange program - State & Local

San Antonio’s Bexar County will be the first county in Texas to have a needle exchange program. The pilot program, approved June 13, is designed to stop the spread of communicable diseases, such as HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B and C, by exchanging one clean needle for every dirty one. Texas is the last state to adopt a program of this kind.

Actually, I can imagine several reasons. It could be the Express-News doesn’t want to unnecessarily fan opposition to the program. Of course, this brings up the whole issue of if the media should avoid controversy but it still not necessarily a bad reason.

What might be a bad reason? They didn’t know about it?

  1. Nice try. The Exp-News ran stories when the state approved the legislation back in April.

  2. There was also a story on May 28 about the Bexar County program. A little research wouldn’t kill you.

  3. The April story was about the bill that was to fund a state wide program. The May 28th story was referring to the proposed Bexar county pilot that was amended to the Medicaid bill. The story was about a number of bills up against a deadline in the House. The actual pilot program wasn’t approved until June 13th. Given the governor’s ability to line item veto, nothing was certain until then. Just ask all the community colleges that just had their health insurance funding vetoed.
