They want you to vote, not to run

Yesterday, I crawled around the Bexar County website to see if I could find out how to file to run for Commissioners Court or figure out how much they were paid. Since I didn’t find anything, I started looking at some other county and city websites and found nothing as well.

I went to the websites for Houston, Harris County, Austin, Travis County, Dallas, and Dallas County and couldn’t find anything on filing as a candidate for office. All of them do a pretty good job of letting people know how to vote, they just apparently aren’t interested in letting them know how to be the votee rather than the voter.

Why?

Maybe it’s part of the process to weed out the less serious candidates. After all, if people can’t be bothered to go downtown and fill out a form, do we really want them in public service?

But given how few people seem to be interested in running for local office, especially when it only pays $20 a week, shouldn’t it be as easy as possible to get information on how to become a candidate for local office?
