What is so scary about Spanish?

North Texas town makes English its official language | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

OAK POINT — A divided City Council has passed a resolution making English the official language of this North Texas town.

The council voted 3-2 Monday for the measure, which will apply only to Oak Point’s operating policies and will not regulate individuals or businesses, as an ordinance would.

What is so scary about Spanish that a country that is made entirely of immigrants would have little towns passing English only measures. I don’t get it folks are we really all that paranoid that is someone is speaking a language we don’t understand we must regulate against it. I can’t help but wonder if the second language they were speaking was Gaelic, French or German if people would feel the same way.

  1. Hillary Clinton made a great point during a debate, that making a language “official” means not allowing the city/state/country to offer services or prints in other languages. For example: a public hand-out to notify citizens about a water shortage or west-nile mosquitos being in the area will be printed only in English. This will cause the other people who don’t speak English to remain uneducated about the situation and develop fines/heath problems, which of course, cost them more money. If these people cant speak English, they are probably lower-class citizens and don’t have extra money for these types of expenses. Bigger problems are created. I think the prupose of these laws being passed is to run out the citizens who don’t speak English, namely, Mexican-Americans.
