Because we don’t have anything better to do

Still, the central question on the voter ID bill has to be: Is there rampant fraud that would be addressed by the legislation?

Bexar County’s First Assistant District Attorney Cliff Herberg said he couldn’t recall the prosecution of a single voter impersonation case in the eight years he’s been there.

This is what bugs me the most about the Texas legislature. They meet once every two years for less than six months and they waste time and energy over issues such as this where this isn’t any evidence of a real problem. Castillo is right, if the Democrats could find a way to suppress Republic voters, they probably would and it would be just as much as a waste of time as what Dewhurst is doing now.

How much time and effort are put into legislating laws which address no known, proven problem? For those who ask if we should wait for an issue to become a problem before we address it, the answer is obviously yes. Are we rushing out and requiring ranchers to test all cattle for mad cow disease? No and we won’t until a couple of people die very public deaths. Our legislators don’t have enough time to address many of the real problems facing Texans now. But then again, if it’s actually a matter of our legislators not wanting or being able to address critical issues, the voter photo ID bill makes perfect sense.
