Police: Virginia Tech shooter an English major, 23 - CNN.com
BLACKSBURG, Virginia (CNN) — The gunman who killed 30 people at Virginia Tech’s Norris Hall before turning the gun on himself was student Cho Seung-Hui, university police Chief Wendell Flinchum said Tuesday.University officials said they were still trying to determine if Cho was responsible for an earlier shooting at a dormitory that left two dead.
Cho, a 23-year-old South Korean and resident alien, lived at the university’s Harper Hall, Flinchum said. He was an English major, the chief said.
Last night, my husband was on the desktop and I was too lazy to get the laptop out so I turned on the news. From 6 until we went to bed around 11 we flipped through CNN, MSNBC and Foxnews. We saw the same clips, the same students and heard nearly the same commentary from all. We heard nothing different from hour to hour and had everything we were going to get within an hour and everything after that was just a repeat of the hour before. Now one thing that was interesting was that last night before we went off to bed we knew that the shooter was a Chinese National who had entered the United States through San Diego in August. Interesting that in the light of day we have a name and the shooter was from South Korea and a student at Virginia Tech. Last time I looked at my globe China and South Korea weren’t the same place but I guess the news channels haven’t looked at their globes recently. What we saw last night was during a crisis the worst thing to do is tune in to the news channels, when they have nothing to report they start reporting supposition. Most of the channels spent quite a bit of time blaming the University itself for any number of things. They didn’t lock down quick enough, they sent out emails and mass messages to all the students but that wasn’t good enough or quick enough and if you tuned in last night you would have thought that the University itself was responsible for the shootings. The police and the university didn’t have crystal ball, they had no clue that more than two hours later a second and much worse incident would occur but somehow they were expected to. I don’t know why I would expect different from the news channels, I remember it is always the same when a major crisis happens but I always turn them on during one anyway.

You mean they didn’t track down people for the “local” angle? No one with a cousin who graduated from the school ten years ago? Someone who lived in the town for a while? No local official from UTSA to explain what they would do in the situation and how prepared they are?
