San Antonio Film Festival Back this year

After a year’s absence, the San Antonio Underground Film Festival is back.

High school teacher Adam Rocha started the very-low-budget festival in 1994 when he was attending San Antonio College.

It couldn’t offer the hype of South by Southwest or the celebrity buzz of Sundance.

But it gave a low-rider bicycle as a grand prize. And it got notice among cinema buffs and filmmakers — both in the United States and in other countries. It even drew independent filmmakers from Europe and Asia.

For a decade, small but enthusiastic crowds came to support the festival and its aspiring cinematic stars. But it ran out of cash in 2005.

Showing the stubbornness and perseverance that allowed him to put together a festival in the first place, the founder was not about to go quietly into a cinematic night.

So now Rocha is announcing that the festival is accepting entries for this year’s event, which is happening June 22 and 23. They’re hoping to spotlight local talent this year.

The deadline for submissions is April 21, although late entries (with late fee) will be accepted until April 30.

This is really exciting. We have gone 4 or 5 years and were sadly disappointed that it was canceled last year. Mark your calendars, it’s June 22 and 23 and come out and support the filmmakers. You might even enjoy yourself. The website the Express news gave was incorrect it is www.safilm.com not .org.
