From a District 8 resident

It was a groundbreaking vote, perhaps an era-defining moment.

Ten City Council members on Thursday agreed to take unequal slices of a proposed half-billion dollar pie.

Imagine that! A city where some are willing to give up their “fair share” for the greater good. And the best part is Rodney Stinson’s district 10 is one of the big winners so the south side might skip sending him a thank you note this year.

For some people, apparently there isn’t ever any justification for spending tax payers money except for the street and sidewalk in front of their own house.

Expect the potent, naysaying Homeowners Taxpayers Association to mobilize. Expect other opposition to arise. The mayor does.

Polling done months ago, the mayor says, shows at least 25 percent will oppose any bond issue, regardless of its merits.

I would really like to know if the 25% opposition is the average for most major cities. I would guess that the lower the median income, the higher percentage. So the question is, which comes first? Does a low median income cause people to reject any tax spending or does the rejection of any tax spending result in a lower median income?
