Primary in February instead of March
AUSTIN - A state as huge as Texas shouldn’t have a paltry primary that’s irrelevant in the presidential sweepstakes, say supporters of legislation that would move up the date of the primary to February 2008.Republicans and Democrats alike are pushing to move the primary election from the first Tuesday in March to the first Tuesday in February. They contend it would give Texas voters a real say in each party’s nomination for president.
I really like the idea of moving our primaries to the beginning of February. We are the 2nd largest state but by the time Super Tuesday rolls around in March the candidates are pretty much already decided. It will be nice to get attention for our votes not just our money.
California and Florida are considering moving up their primaries also. It will be funny to watch what will happen in 2012 with states like Iowa and New Hampshire. I can’t imagine they will be happy to have some of the big states primaries to contend with. If we aren’t careful we might end up doing our primary voting the year before the election.
