Free smoke detectors
Quick public service announcement, if you live in San Antonio the Fire Department will install a smoke detector for free. Call 211. I do realize that if you are reading this it means you have a computer and internet access so the chance that you can’t buy yourself a smoke detector is pretty slim but you might have a relative or friend that could use this information.
If you have the extra money and can purchase one I would recommend getting one with a silence button so when you cook something a little too long you don’t feel the urge to take the battery out. If you live in an older house, and there are a lot of those in San Antonio, a Carbon Monoxide detector is a good idea too.
The next time a fire death is reported, you can almost be certain responders will find no working alarm.

call 211 Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. If you
already have one, check the batteries to make sure they are working.
