Beginning today, those interested in running for the City Council in the May 12 election can submit their applications.
Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, be at least 18 and be registered to vote in the city. In addition, they also must have lived in San Antonio for at least one year and at least six months in the district in which they are running.
Applications will be accepted through March 12 in the city clerk’s office.
Early voting begins April 30 and ends May 8.

For all you patriotic citizens out there, you too can run for city council by paying a $100 filing fee. Just don’t quit your day job since I’m pretty sure the annual council member salary of $1040 won’t lift you over the poverty level.
And if that’s not enough to keep you from dedicating yourself to learning the ins and outs of city government, just remember that you’ve only got four years to do it and then you’re out of there. Since we only pay you $1040 a year, we know that if you stay more than two terms you’ve got to be using your position for, shall we say, self-serving reasons?
So if you’ve got a little local problem you want to get taken care of, say widening a street, putting in some stop lights, improving drainage, or adding some fields at your nearby park, here’s your chance. If elected you’ll only have a few years to try to get anything done so you may as well focus on some immediate benefit. There’s certainly no financial incentive to spend any more time than necessary to get your pet projects done and get out of there.
Besides, anyone who would try to plan for more than four years in the future doesn’t belong on the San Antonio city council.
And just as an fyi, if you’re not from districts 8, 9, or 10, be sure to send Rodney Stinson a thank you note every time you spend money in your district.
