I thought he was gone
I could have very happily lived for the rest of my life without ever hearing the name Newt Gingrich again. It was a happy day for me and the country when he chose to resign in 1998. It doesn’t make any sense that a man who left office with a 28% approval rating and 57% of the nation feeling he wasn’t honest enough to be speaker of the house is running for president. I can’t imagine that his position at American Enterprise Institute and guest spots on Fox news would have changed anyones feelings about him. I would have to hope that between making it clear he thinks that the first amendment should be rethought and things like this he shouldn’t be a real contender for president.
Gingrich: English language key to assimilation | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle
Gingrich pushes for English as official language Possible GOP presidential candidate says it’s key to assimilationWASHINGTON — American civilization eventually will collapse if government doesn’t do a better job assimilating immigrants into society, possible GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said Wednesday as he urged Congress to enshrine English as the nation’s official language.
The former House speaker said political correctness and multiculturalism are clouding the debate about language.
“If you are pro-immigration to America, you should be pro-assimilation into English as the common language because in fact your children and grandchildren will have a dramatically better future if they are part of the common commercial civilization,” Gingrich said.
He spoke at a news conference organized by ProEnglish, a Virginia-based group pushing for governments across the country to adopt official-English laws.
Congress should shift funding for bilingual education to English immersion programs for students, Gingrich recommended, saying bilingual education has trapped people in what he termed linguistic ghettos.
Sounds all fine and dandy doesn’t it? He is even worried about people being trapped in “linguistic ghettos.” Funny, I don’t remember him ever worrying about anyone that couldn’t help fund his life.
What he fails to mention is that the United States is a country of immigrants. Newt’s ancestors were immigrants as were probably every other Americans’ reading this right now. Did they need the government to force English-only laws on them to assimilate or did they build this nation without the need for the government to micromanage their lives? I guess we better watch out because even though the United States has survived 231 years as a immigrant-based nation without an official language if we don’t hurry up and make one “American civilization eventually will collapse.” You have to wonder if he thinks these things through before he speaks. I know, I am just not playing along, I am supposed to forget I have a brain and be scared because he wants me to be. Shame on me for not falling in line.
