DANBURY, Texas – School district officials refused to distribute the Panther Press, the high school newspaper, because the principal did not approve the content. Stories about the consequences of teenage sexual activity, sexually transmitted diseases and teenage parenting, and editorials making abortion-rights and anti-abortion arguments were written by Danbury High School students, journalism teacher Kristi Piper said. She said she thought the content was appropriate and balanced.
Man, this just stinks. The students took it upon themselves to write about the one thing all teenagers are thinking about but no one will get to see it. It is downright negligent not to arm our kids with the facts before they make decisions about their sexual lives. Don’t kid yourself that because they grew up in a good Christian house that they will not give in to their emotions and hormones. The biggest lie we hear again and again is that if we teach abstinance it will be the end to teen pregnancy and stds. I suppose if we put our heads in the sand that it will just go away, because that always works so well.

Piper said she believes the material was age-appropriate.
“I do think they really did a responsible job writing about it, and
so I thought they handled it really well,” she said. “And it is
something that’s part of their lives, and I didn’t want to say, ‘No,
your lives are inappropriate.’ ”Danbury school administrators met with journalism students last week
to explain why they kept the newspaper out of students’ hands.
It’s a shame. I will be looking for a copy to make its way onto someone’s myspace account so we can read it. I am sure it will. On the good side of this, the administration now made this particular issue forbidden so you can be sure every student at the school will be reading it cover to cover. There is a good chance it would have been thrown aside before they made it an issue but now more than ever it will be the thing to read. I am sure the xerox’s are working as we speak.
