The mulch pile isn’t the only stink from Helotes

Did anyone see the story KSAT 12 did on how the Helotes Little League is about to lose their fields because a big, bad, mean land owner is going to kick them off their fields? I didn’t actually see it aired but you can go to the website and see it. What a touching story, reporter Erik Barajas interviewed the league vice president, Tony Pena, about how not only do they have to leave, they don’t have the money to remove their fixtures from the field.

And just who is that mean man that the league sued and lost? Who is so powerful to actually win a court case against poor, innocent little kids who just want to play baseball? Well, uh, Barajas doesn’t get around to mentioning it in the story. Just an oversight I’m sure, newscasts only have so much time to give to a story. And I’m sure that’s the reason why the reporter didn’t explain why the league lost it’s court case. Who cares as long as someone is able to help the league salvage what items it can from the fields restore the fields to their original condition?

Maybe if KSAT could find out who the owner is, Barahas could do another story. He does know who the owner is, doesn’t he? Certainly he at least contacted the owner in the original report for his version of events? He’s a responsible journalist, of course, he did.

Anyway, what kind of story might it be? Maybe it would be something along the lines about how a generous land owner allowed a Little League to use his land for baseball fields for only the cost of taxes. If the reporter did a little research, perhaps he might find out that the board members hadn’t bother to pay the taxes. Or maybe he might find out that the lease that expired was a one year lease that was given so that the league would have a year to find new fields. Who knows, maybe the league lost its court case because it was a pathetic example of petty individuals abusing their office and powers.

But that would require looking up documents, interviewing more than one individual, and maybe even finding out exactly who is the land owner. That’s probably too much to expect from local television news–presenting both sides of the story. And I thought the Express-News could be bad.

  1. Read your story and you are right. Didn’t look into even 1% of the true story. How the landowner only asked for 2 individuals to step down off the board, and one of those individuals had not had a kid out there for 7 years. The other individual was at the time the President and the treasure at the same time. By the way the wife was getting paid to run the snack bar(Were are the W-2′S ???). Since then the old President has filed suit against 2 board members that questioned the books and another person that wasn’t on the board, that wanted answers too. you can look these suit’s up in the county and district court. Also he forgot to mention that the league has filed suit again against the landowner. Another suit they will lose. Why you might ask. Because curtain people can’t leave it along that these poor kids lost out. All the landowner asked is that you get the rats out of the barn and start new and if they did that you probably would of gotten the fields back. He has said show me that you can run an honest league and you can stay. You should check out a Bexar county police report # 2007014350-01 Filed on 2-6-2007 at 10185 Braun Rd, Helotes texas. THis will show you how this board works. By the way the landowner told the board they could leave the the assets and walk away and they could of saved all that money. You should look at the new suit in the Bexar county court. Not in the district court were they lost the first one. Were they affraid to get the same Judge. In the county court look under Cause # 323250 Another question to ask is why they haven’t had a true general membership meeting to discuss the old and new suit. Why did they change the general membership meeting from once a year to once a year but you have to have 200 general members at the meeting to discuss anything and a person is at the door to make sure no one is allowed in that isn’t a member. You can look at any LL league in the nation and they don’t asked for 200 members to have the meeting. At one meeting they had over 130 members wanting to get answers and still wouldn’t have it. Once again a few people are using the money that the kids could use to play ball to fight a law suit that should of never taken place. I alwayed asked that if you told the board members that agreed to these suits to pay any money out of there pockets when they lose, instead of the parents this suit would of been finished along time ago.
