Don’t mess with our Cowboys games!
Star-Telegram | 12/16/2006 | Lawmakers step into feud over football
Two South Texas lawmakers are seeking to broker a peace treaty between cable television providers and the NFL Network so their constituents won’t miss any important football games, especially ones involving the Dallas Cowboys.
State Sen. Eddie Lucio of Brownsville and state Rep. Jose Menendez of San Antonio, both Democrats, have filed resolutions for the upcoming legislative session urging the two sides to end their feud so NFL Network games will be available on cable outlets across Texas.
Because the sides cannot reach a compromise, tonight’s Cowboys-Falcons game is blacked out in all cable markets outside Dallas-Fort Worth.
“Some of the most stalwart football and Cowboys fans reside in South Texas,” Lucio said. “Cable television is the only hope for football fans from this area, as well as from other areas of the state, to watch professional and college football, or even high school games, because of the vastness of the state. They are paying cable customers, and supply should meet their demand.”
Neither Lucio’s Senate Concurrent Resolution 2 nor Menendez’s House Concurrent Resolution 21 would carry the force of law, even if they are adopted by both legislative chambers. But the legislators said that both sides need to hear the message that ordinary fans want them to send.
This is just funny. I certainly have heard alot about this particular issue in my house but I didn’t expect it to be discussed in the Texas House.
There is actually a lot more to this issue than the article explains. The NFL is demanding an extraordinarily high premium to carry its channel and expecting the cable companies to keep it on the basic package. I don’t have an answer to this given that I am not a huge football fan, but I live with one and he is just disgusted with situation in general.
