What was the problem for this solution?
Gov. Rick Perry on Tuesday announced the creation of a competitive council designed to strengthen the state’s economic development clout.”Toyota came to Texas in spite of the state’s inability at that time to offer meaningful incentives,” Perry said during the closing keynote speech at the Texas Lyceum’s conference at the Convention Center.
Toyota, which opens its $850 million Tundra truck plant Friday, is a key reason Perry established the Texas Enterprise Fund and the Emerging Technology Fund.
Since Toyota came to San Antonio without any meaningful incentives, Perry established a fund to provide incentives for companies to relocate to Texas. Does anyone else see a problem with this?
Obviously companies make their relocation decisions on something other than local economic incentives. Then how can the Toyota experience possibly be the basis for creating a corporate welfare Enterprise Fund? Maybe we would be better off if we spent some time figuring out exactly why Toyota did choose San Antonio rather than creating a solution for a problem that didn’t exist.
