Darfur Cannot Wait
If you had of known the Holocaust was happening, would you have taken steps to stop it? I think most of us believe that we would have. Many of us were not alive then and our reaction is “How could this have happened?” So, you would do something, right? What if there was a genocide going on in our world right now? You would do something, right? Oh, wait, there is a genocide. Now. Right now. In our world. The people of Darfur, Sudan are being slaughtered by their own government. 400,000 dead. 2.5 million displaced. The killing continues on a daily basis. So, what are you doing?
“Oh, wait, but, what can I do? I am only one person. This is happening half a world away. World leaders are working to stop it. What possible difference can I make?”
I don’t really know what difference you or I can make. I do know that what we cannot do, what the people of Darfur cannot afford for us to do, is nothing. Every voice added to the cry of “Never Again” is a voice that might make the difference. I am not going to try and describe all that is happening in Darfur, because there are plenty of websites where you can get that information (start at www.SaveDarfur.org). I am just asking you to go to them, see what they say (and they do have suggestions for what each of us can do), and then see if you can turn your back on these people. They need our help. Now. Today. They cannot afford for us to wait.
If you are interested in getting involved in the San Antonio area, come to a meeting of the San Antonio Interfaith Darfur Coalition. Go to www.upcsa.org and click on the Darfur link.
