Voter Intimidation

Raids Widen ‘Immigrant’ Letter Probe - Los Angeles Times:

The investigation by California Department of Justice agents stems from a racially charged letter that Nguyen admits his office sent to about 14,000 registered voters in central Orange County. The letter, which warned “immigrants” they could be jailed or deported if they tried to vote, has spurred condemnation across the political spectrum and an investigation into possible voting rights violations.Nguyen, a Vietnamese immigrant who is running to unseat Democratic U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez, maintains that he neither wrote nor authorized the instantly infamous letter, claiming it was the work of a campaign manager he refused to name. According to the head of the Orange County Republican Party, however, the mailing house that sent the letter said Nguyen had a direct hand in it

14,000 registered voters received this threatening letter. I wish I was surprised. The only thing about this that surprises me is that it was covered by national news. I know it is easy to think of this as as one time incident but it is not. Nguyen’s campaign manager wouldn’t have done this if it wasn’t a proven strategy in minority areas. It has happened in Florida, Ohio, Michigan, Louisiana, Texas, North Carolina and on and on. It isn’t just affecting Southern voters and it is being perpetrated by those holding high positions. If we continue to allow this kind of corruption to run rampant we can expect our government, by the people, for the people to disappear forever.

One Response to “Voter Intimidation”

  1. [...] Who does this? I just don’t understand. If I am supporting any candidate, I am expecting him/her to win on their merits, not because of a dirty trick. There are many people I know who vote exactly opposite just about anything I vote and while I would probably be happy for them to forget to go to the polls I would never knowingly mislead them. Their votes are as important as mine. I might think they are all wrong but I don’t believe they have a lesser right to have their voices heard. I would much rather change their minds on the issues and the candidates. If my arguments don’t stand up then so be it. The people that put out flyers like these or send letters like Tan Nguyen’s staff did are incomprehesible to me. Shouldn’t they believe their candidates can win without dirty tricks? Shouldn’t there be someone they know that sits them down and talks to them about political ethics? Voter suppression should not be an option that pops into anyone’s head. I know I am an idealist but this is just basic moral fiber we are talking about. We need to shine a bright light on every single instance of voter fraud and suppression we see and stand up and say NO MORE.
