Say NO to spin!
CNN.com - House approves wiretap law before hitting campaign trail - October 2, 2006:
WASHINGTON (AP) — The House approved a bill Thursday that would grant legal status to President Bush’s warrantless wiretapping program with new restrictions. Republicans called it a test before the election of whether Democrats want to fight or coddle terrorists.
“The Democrats’ irrational opposition to strong national security policies that help keep our nation secure should be of great concern to the American people,” Majority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, said in a statement after the bill passed 232-191.
Why are we letting anyone get away with this? John Boehner, like many before him, is throwing out an outrageous claim with no basis in reality and no one is calling him on it. There is nothing irrational about being against unchecked powers. This isn’t coddling terrorists, if there is a suspicion of terrorism then there is grounds for a warrant to wire tap. John Boehner statement should have read something like “Today, we gave our President unchecked power to wire-tap where and when he wants.” That is what the republicans did but that wouldn’t play well would it?
Why is the media, the democrats, the people allowing the republicans to boldly lie and not calling them on it? We have seen this again and again in recent years and we shouldn’t allow it. When you see it happening, write an email. If enough of us demand the rhetoric to stop and stand up to it with our votes it will stop. Don’t just believe things because they are said loudly and repeated. Next time you hear a politician pontificating spend the five minutes to look up what they are talking about and demand that they stop the spin.
Those willing to give up a little liberty for a little security deserve neither security nor liberty.

Great quote from Franklin. So the congress is saying to the president, “go ahead, do what ever you want and as long as you notify a few of us (don’t worry, we wouldn’t presume to have you ask us first), we’ll abdicate our responsibility to make sure you are using your authority appropriately.” Now why do we have three branches of government?
That is exactly what they did. They had to take it that extra step further though by painting the democrats refusal to vote for it as irrational and against national security. I suppose the best defense is a good offense because now they don’t need to answer for their votes because the democrats are irrational. How do they say this stuff with a straight face?
[...] I just have to say here that pundits make me queasy. Listening to Ken Mehlman last night talking about how he so looks forward to working with the Democrats because they are good people and so are the Republicans. Give me a break, he didn’t come up with that lovely observation until after the house was lost. The GOP has been stomping all over the Democratic party for years calling them irrational folks that don’t want to protect you or yours. It just makes me ill watching them. I suppose it is about time to turn off the tv.
