keyetv.com - AG Office Announces Child Support Debit Card

(CBS 42) AUSTIN Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott announced a new way to receive child support Wednesday: using a debit card. The “Texas Debit Card” will give parents access to their child support payment through a Visa debit card, which can be used like any other debit card.

Parents can make two free cash withdrawals per month at any Wells Fargo automated teller machine. They can make two additional cash withdrawals without a fee from a teller at any bank displaying the Visa or PLUS brand mark. Fees can be avoided by requesting cash back with a
purchase.

I really want to think of this as a good thing but keep running up against the fees. Wasn’t Wells Fargo getting enough fees from its customers? There are over 900,000 families receiving child support in Texas and lets just say 100,000 get a 50 cent fee every month, that is $600,000 a year for the bank and $600,000 out of the mouth of babes. That is a nice piece of change and you have to wonder why Wells Fargo?

On the subject of child support, don’t believe what you hear from Greg Abbott about how strong he is about child support collections. My ex-husband is over $38,000 behind in child support and calls to his office go unanswered or I spend hours on hold to be told my case is being looked at. My case has been in limbo for nearly 14 years now. They know where he is and who is employer is but they just don’t care. How’s that for family values? If my ex is that far behind now and they aren’t doing anything what do you suppose will happen after this.

Dallas Morning News | Big cuts threaten child support AG seeks funds, says 2/3 of staff faces layoffs

By ROBERT T. GARRETT / The Dallas Morning News AUSTIN – Federal budget cuts could cripple Texas’ efforts to collect child support payments, forcing the state to lay off at least 1,750 employees. Attorney General Greg Abbott informed legislative leaders Friday that if his office doesn’t get more state funds next year, its child support division will be forced to lay off two-thirds of its employees. “Over half our offices serving families across the state could close,” he said. Mr. Abbott’s aides said child support collections would plunge by at least $2 billion, from $9 billion this year. “That is money that will not go to families,” said Janece Rolfe, spokeswoman for the child support division, which has slightly more than 2,700 employees.
