Ohio congressman to plead guilty in bribe case - CNN.com:
October 13, 2006 WASHINGTON (AP) –The Jack Abramoff influence-peddling investigation claims its first member of Congress on Friday with Rep. Bob Ney set to plead guilty to taking bribes. Ney, an Ohio Republican in his sixth term, faces up to 10 years in prison in a scandal that has tainted the White House as well as Capitol Hill.
He hasn’t resigned!! Bob Ney signed his plea deal a month ago and then saw fit to continue to hold his position in congress. What part of this am I not understanding?
Ney, scheduled enter his plea Friday, signed papers a month ago admitting to charges of conspiracy and making false statements. He also acknowledged that he had deprived the public of his honest services.
About the same time, Ney checked into an alcohol rehabilitation program.
This is just odd and the second time this month we are seeing this. Why would we care that he checked into an alcohol rehab program? What does alcoholism and taking bribes have to do with each other? I know several alcoholics and they are still themselves drunk or sober. I might find them more fun to be around sober but their entire moral compass doesn’t change because of lack of alcohol. If you aren’t interested in 16 year old little boys when you are sober, you sure aren’t going to be interested in them when you are drunk. I am really sorry former Rep. Foley but I don’t think the country is going to buy it. If we aren’t going to buy that then I am pretty sure we won’t buy that someone in a position of power took bribes because he was an alcoholic. Being elected to office is an honor and the people deserved better than this. Hiding misdeeds behind a real disease that affects thousands is a pathetic stunt and you should both be ashamed.
Despite his admission of criminal activity, Ney, 52, is entitled to collect a congressional pension.
I suppose this is just icing on the cake. How many of you can say that if you commit a felony related to your job that you can still collect your pension?
